I think what everybody's gripe with Sm4sh is that compared to the games that came before it, this game doesn't offer a lot of new things.

SSB64 started it all. The world's finest video game heroes coming together for a battle royale to determine who's the greatest. Nobody thought a game like this would ever get made. Back then, crossovers in video games were only the stuff of children's dreams. Super Smash Bros. made those dreams reality.

When Melee came out, we got a vastly expanded roster, and we were introduced to new features such as Event Battles, Multi-Man Smash, and trophy collecting. We were introduced to Crazy Hand and Giga Bowser, who turned out to be popular characters, and Marth, who helped get the Fire Emblem series' foot in the door for its North American debut.

When we got Brawl, we got Sonic and Snake, the first non-Nintendo fighters to compete. We also got a more coherent story mode in The Subspace Emissary, which expanded on the lore behind SSB, as well as a custom stage builder, online play, and more.

SSB4, well, it's not terrible, but there's not nearly as much novelty to it as the older ones. There are new fighters, even some new non-Nintendo ones, but that's nothing new. The box says "Super Smash Bros. for Wii U," and that's pretty much exactly what you got. No more, and no less.

What players look for in a good sequel is to recapture that feeling of experiencing the series for the first time, and they feel they aren't getting that from SSB4. What do you think? Personally, I don't think familiarity is a bad thing. I like knowing what I'm doing.

Exactly. It's fun, but nothing that new.
