I generally don't like the idea, more specifically when the official character is popular and/or good-looking, though a part of my young self understands people doing this.

That being said, there are some fans who work hard for their OC's bio and relationship to stay coherent with the canon context no matter what. And those people generally accept the fact that their own scenario is an imaginary one and assume it.
